Art by Bernardino Luini

Luini worked in Milan within Leonardo da Vinci's immediate circle, close enough stylistically that for centuries several of his paintings were mistaken for Leonardo's own work. He became known for soft-featured, elongated-eyed female faces so distinctive that Vladimir Nabokov later coined the adjective "Luinesque" to describe them. He spent time in Rome around 1521, where contact with Raphael's work visibly loosened and warmed his palette in the years after. More recently, art historian Matthew Landrus has controversially argued that Luini, not Leonardo, may have painted much of the disputed Salvator Mundi, the painting that sold at auction in 2017 for $450.3 million.
