Morisot was the only woman among the founding members of the Impressionist group, exhibiting in nearly all of their independent shows starting in 1874, at a time when respectable women weren't supposed to be seen working as professional painters at all, let alone exhibiting alongside men. She married Eugène Manet, brother of painter Édouard Manet, who painted her portrait multiple times before she became his sister-in-law. Her own work focused on domestic and intimate scenes, women dressing, mothers with children, gardens, painted with a looseness and speed that rivaled anything Monet or Renoir were doing, though for decades she was treated as a minor figure in a movement she'd helped build from the start.
