Hockney's 1967 painting A Bigger Splash, a flat, sun-bleached Los Angeles swimming pool frozen at the exact instant someone disappears underwater, became one of the defining images of postwar British art despite being painted by an Englishman fresh off moving to California. Decades later, well into his eighties, he took up an iPad as a serious drawing tool, producing large-scale digital landscapes of the Yorkshire countryside and, in 2019, an enormous mural made entirely on the device for the Normandy American Cemetery. He's spent his career moving between deliberately bold, almost flat color and close observational study, treating new tools, Polaroid collages, fax machines, tablets, as just more ways to keep looking.
