Shrigley makes deliberately crude-looking drawings, often just black ink on white paper, paired with captions that land somewhere between deadpan joke and genuine unease, a body of work that's found an audience well beyond the usual gallery crowd. In 2016 he won the commission for London's Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square with Really Good, a bronze thumbs-up sculpture stretched to nearly seven meters tall, its cartoonish gesture made strange by sheer scale. A major survey of his work, "Brain Activity," filled London's Hayward Gallery in 2012, confirming that what looks like a doodle can still carry real institutional weight.
