Hernández trained as an industrial designer in Havana before co-founding Ordo Amoris Cabinet in 1994, a Cuban artist collective that spent nearly a decade making pointed, design-inflected work about everyday life under Cuban socialism. After the group disbanded in 2003, he relocated to Europe, eventually settling in Düsseldorf, where his solo practice, painting, drawing, sculptural installation, kept circling back to fragility and incompleteness, often reworking Cuban revolutionary iconography into something quieter and more domesticated. He's shown at the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Bienal, and the Sydney Biennale, and is married to fellow artist Anne Pöhlmann.
