Art by Edmund Dulac (1882-1953)

Dulac was a French-born illustrator who became one of the defining names of the early-20th-century "golden age" of book illustration, working mostly in Britain on lavishly illustrated gift editions of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, and The Arabian Nights, all rendered in jewel-toned watercolor with a deliberately Persian and Orientalist visual vocabulary. Beyond books, he put his design skills to more unusual civic use during and after both world wars, designing postage stamps, banknotes, and medals, including currency for the Free French forces during World War II.
