Viennese painter (1872–1925), son of another painter with the exact same name, who split his career between serious symbolist easel painting and daily newspaper cartooning. The real hook is his 1923 comic strip Bilderbogen des kleinen Lebens, co-written with the novelist Hugo Bettauer, which comics historian Paul M. Malone credits as possibly the first regularly appearing comic strip with speech balloons in continental Europe. Bettauer was assassinated by a Nazi sympathizer in March 1925; Gareis died that October, at 52.
