Art by Jean Hey

For centuries, this French court painter was known only as the "Master of Moulins," an anonymous label assigned by art historians based on his most important surviving work, the Moulins Triptych, a Madonna and Child flanked by portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Bourbon and their daughter. His actual identity only came to light when researchers found an inscription on the back of a different painting, Christ Crowned with Thorns, reading "Jean Hey, teutonicus and pictor egregius," meaning a distinguished painter of Germanic or Netherlandish origin, later corroborated by surviving court records from the early 1500s. He likely trained under Hugo van der Goes before settling into royal French patronage.
