Utzon won the international competition to design the Sydney Opera House in 1957, and the building that resulted became one of the most recognizable structures of the 20th century, but he never actually saw it finished. Disputes with the New South Wales government over cost and design changes led him to resign from the project in 1966, and he never returned to Australia, missing the building's 1973 opening entirely. He's often said to have arrived at the geometry for the building's shell-like roof sections while peeling an orange, realizing each shell could be cut from segments of a single sphere. He won the Pritzker Prize in 2003, and a room inside the finished Opera House was later dedicated to him.
