Art by Kamal-ol-Molk (1847-1940)

Born Mohammad Ghaffari, Kamal-ol-Molk received his honorific title, meaning roughly "perfection of the realm," directly from the Qajar shah of Iran, and is generally credited with introducing European academic realism and linear perspective into Iranian painting for the first time. He spent about four years in Europe in the late 1890s, studying Raphael, Titian, and Rembrandt firsthand, and taught himself Western perspective techniques largely through direct observation rather than formal instruction. On returning to Iran he founded an art school that revived traditional crafts, carpet weaving, mosaic, woodwork, alongside painting instruction, treating fine art and craft as part of the same continuous tradition rather than separate categories.
