Art by Luigi Crosio

Crosio trained at Turin's Accademia Albertina and spent his career painting genre scenes, historical subjects, and religious imagery, most famously Refugium Peccatorum (1898), a Madonna painting for which one of his own daughters reportedly modeled. Away from painting, his family history took an unexpected mathematical turn: another daughter, Carola Crosio, married Giuseppe Peano, the Italian mathematician known for foundational work in set theory and logic, in 1887, linking a fairly traditional academic painter's household to one of the more significant names in modern mathematics.
