Chagall's paintings are instantly recognizable for their floating figures, upside-down fiddlers, flying lovers, and drifting village scenes, drawn repeatedly from memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, in what's now Belarus, filtered through a dreamlike logic that owes something to Cubism and Surrealism without fully belonging to either. Beyond canvas, he designed major stained-glass installations, including windows for the United Nations headquarters, Reims Cathedral in France, and the Hadassah Medical Center synagogue in Jerusalem, translating his floating, luminous color into physical light passing through glass. He once said he wanted his paintings to feel like he'd "married the moon," a fittingly strange way to describe work that never quite obeys gravity.
