Gray, a Scottish painter associated with the "Glasgow Girls," the women artists linked to the Glasgow School around the turn of the 20th century, was nicknamed "Purple Patch" by peers for her habit of finding purple hidden inside shadow where other painters saw only grey or black. During World War I she volunteered as a nurse with the Scottish Women's Hospitals in France while continuing to paint, producing works like The Belgian in Exile and Hôpital Auxiliaire that came directly out of what she witnessed there; one painting, showing the Scottish Women's Hospital set up inside a French abbey cloister, was acquired by the Imperial War Museum. She later became the first woman to join the hanging committee of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
