Not everything is what it seems. What at first glance appears to be a lute is merely a lute case, an old wooden case for the instrument. The books, too, are disappointing: they are bindings, flimsy covers of leather or parchment, intended for storing identification and other documents. They are old games, discarded and worthless, perishable. Still Life with Books is a work by Jan Lievens, c. 1628 - c. 1632. panel; support: height 91 cm x width 120 cm. It is held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
