Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026) was a pioneering Japanese contemporary artist celebrated for her hypnotic polka dots, immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms, vibrant pumpkin sculptures, and intricate Infinity Nets paintings. Born on 22 March 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama developed a distinctive artistic language shaped by visual hallucinations she experienced from childhood. Working across painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and literature, she explored infinity, repetition, identity, and the relationship between the individual and the universe. A leading figure in the 1960s New York avant-garde, Kusama challenged artistic conventions through radical performances, feminist expression, and her philosophy of self-obliteration. Her work transformed deeply personal psychological experiences into immersive encounters that invite viewers to question the boundaries of their own existence. Kusama passed away on 14 August 2026 in Tokyo, aged 97. She continued creating art until her final days, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy spanning more than seven decades. Her endlessly repeating dots and mirrored universes remain powerful symbols of her lifelong exploration of infinity, love, and the human experience.
