Moments from Art Basel Miami Beach

Launched in 2002 as the American offshoot of the original Art Basel fair in Switzerland, which had run since 1970, it landed in Miami Beach at a moment when the city had almost no serious contemporary art infrastructure to speak of, and the fair essentially built one around itself. Within a decade it had helped turn the once-industrial Wynwood neighborhood into a globally known arts district and made December, previously Miami's off-season, into the single busiest week on the city's cultural calendar. The main fair runs inside the Miami Beach Convention Center, hundreds of galleries from dozens of countries under one roof, but it is now genuinely outnumbered by the satellite fairs, parties, and pop-up exhibitions that spread across the city around it.

Treat the main fair and the surrounding week as two different experiences. The Convention Center itself rewards a plan, with that many galleries in one building it's easy to burn out within an hour without a strategy, so scan the exhibitor map and prioritize before you go in rather than wandering. The satellite fairs, particularly around Wynwood and the Design District, are often where the more experimental and lower-priced work turns up, and they're free or far cheaper to enter than the main fair's ticket.
