Moments from Moco Museum

Moco, short for Modern Contemporary, opened in Amsterdam in 2016 inside Villa Alsberg, a nineteenth-century canal house just off Museumplein, and it built its identity from the start around exactly the artists that more academically minded museums nearby tend to treat with some reservation: Banksy, Andy Warhol, and a rotating cast of Instagram-friendly immersive and street-adjacent shows. It's a privately run, for-profit museum rather than a state or municipally funded institution like its neighbors, the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk, a distinction that shapes both its programming choices and its considerably more populist tone.

That populism is worth going in understanding rather than judging against a different museum's standards, Moco set out deliberately to be the accessible, high-energy counterpart to the historically weightier institutions surrounding it, and its Banksy holdings in particular are genuinely extensive and well presented for anyone who's only ever seen his work in photographs of street walls. Expect crowds and a livelier, more photograph-driven atmosphere than the museums around it, and budget it as a shorter, punchier visit, an hour or two, rather than a full afternoon.
