Cornish Woman of Spanish Descent (c. 1916)

When I saw this painting during the exhibition, I kept coming back to her face. She seams just tired, thoughtful, and completely uninterested in performing for the viewer. The background is full of colour, but she feels heavy, almost carrying the whole room with her.

About This Artwork

Painted around 1916 while Edith Collier was studying in Europe, A Cornish Woman of Spanish Descent reflects the bold colours and simplified forms she embraced after encountering Post-Impressionism. At the time, this style was considered remarkably progressive for a New Zealand artist. The exhibition Ahead of Her Time explores how Collier challenged artistic expectations long before her work was widely appreciated.
