About This Artwork

FACES & PHASES Celebrating 20 years Initiated in 2006, the year South Africa became the first country in Africa to legalize same-sex marriage, Zanele Muholi’s Faces and Phases responds to the erasure of Black lesbian and bisexual women, transgender and gender non-conforming people from public and historical records. Now marking its 20th anniversary, the series has grown into an archive of hundreds of portraits made across five continents. This exhibition brings together 100 Faces and Phases, including a group of new portraits of Amsterdam’s Black queer community, photographed during WorldPride Amsterdam 2026.
