I love the contrast with Trafalgar Square. A place surrounded by monuments to powerful men suddenly has this enormous Black woman moving confidently through it.
About This Artwork
Lady in Blue is a monumental sculpture by American artist Tschabalala Self, unveiled on London's Fourth Plinth in September 2025. The sculpture depicts a confident Black woman striding forward in a vivid blue dress, high heels and matching jewellery. Her exaggerated proportions, commanding posture and outstretched hand create a figure that is simultaneously glamorous, powerful and unmistakably contemporary. The striking blue references the historical significance of lapis lazuli, a precious mineral used to create some of art history's most celebrated pigments. Rather than commemorating a monarch, military leader or historical hero, Self celebrates an everyday woman. She represents the diversity, ambition and energy of modern London, challenging traditional ideas about who deserves to occupy a monumental public space.
