Personal Reflection
As an emigrant myself, I always go to theater when I come back from Amsterdam to Belgrade. This one is particularly personal for me. Ana (daughter) has adapted to life abroad, to automation, to the language of political correctness; her mother Ljiljana has not, and refuses to. The play never judges either of them for it. It’s a quiet grief of two people who love each other but no longer share a world.
About This Artwork
Rolerkoster is a tragicomedy written by Jelena Kajgo, directed by Milica Kralj, premiering at Atelje 212 in Belgrade. The play centers on a mother-daughter relationship strained by generational divide, emigration, and the disorienting pace of contemporary life. The cast includes Dara Džokić, Katarina Marković, Jelena Petrović, Vladislav Mihailović, Petar Mihailović, Milica Mihajlović, and Teodor Vinčić. Milica Kralj directs with Chekhovian restraint, staying close to the psychology of each character rather than pushing for theatrical effect. Katarina Marković navigates Ana’s contradictions with ease: the resilience of someone who chose to survive without romanticizing the cost. The absurdist robot, surprisingly, carries some of the production’s most honest emotional weight.
