Moments from Straat museum

STRAAT opened in 2020 inside a colossal former shipbuilding warehouse on the NDSM wharf, a stretch of industrial waterfront north of central Amsterdam that spent decades as a derelict shipyard before artists and squatters moved in during the 1990s and slowly turned it into one of the city's main creative districts. The museum itself is essentially one enormous hall, floor to ceiling, wall to wall, covered in large-scale street art and graffiti by more than 150 artists from the global scene, work that in almost every other context would be temporary by nature, painted over or weathered away within a season.

Getting there is part of the experience: a free ferry runs from behind Amsterdam Centraal station across the IJ river directly to NDSM, a ten-minute ride that most tourists skip entirely in favor of the museum triangle around Museumplein. Once you're there, don't rush straight to the museum doors, the NDSM wharf itself is covered in murals, repurposed shipping containers, and industrial leftovers that function as an open-air extension of what's inside. Because the work is scaled for a warehouse rather than a gallery wall, step back further than instinct tells you to. Most of these pieces were designed to be seen from thirty feet away, not three.
