Personal Reflection
Before the exhibition even opens, it’s already happening outside. Suspended mid-air, not quite placed, not quite stable, this Companion feels strangely human. Like it’s arriving rather than being installed. There’s something poetic about catching it like this, in between states. KAWS characters often look emotionally paused, with those crossed-out eyes that feel less like anonymity and more like withdrawal. But here, hanging from a crane in front of a grand, classical façade, the contrast becomes louder. Soft cartoon body, heavy wood material, delicate gesture, industrial machinery. It almost feels like the city is negotiating with it. Old Vienna meets global pop culture, and neither fully wins. And maybe that’s the point. You don’t walk into this exhibition cold. You’re already inside it, just by passing by.
About This Artwork
The upcoming KAWS: Art & Comix exhibition at the ALBERTINA MODERN runs from April to September 2026 and explores the intersection of comics, street art, and contemporary fine art. KAWS, originally a graffiti artist, built his visual language by reworking familiar cartoon characters into something more introspective and ambiguous. His signature figure, Companion, appears repeatedly across sculptures and paintings, often embodying a kind of quiet melancholy beneath its playful exterior. What makes this exhibition particularly interesting is its context. It doesn’t isolate KAWS. Instead, it places him in dialogue with artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, examining how “low” culture like comics and cartoons has continuously reshaped “high” art spaces. The outdoor installation acts as a threshold moment. It translates KAWS’ language into public space, where anyone, intentionally or not, becomes part of the audience. And maybe also part of the artwork.
