🌟Personal Reflection
This is the first artwork where the price feels like part of the composition. The painting itself is quiet. Almost too quiet for the noise around it. The more I look at it, the more it feels like the value isn’t coming from what I see, but from everything I know about it. The rediscovery. The doubt. The auction theater. And that makes me wonder if this is less about Leonardo, and more about our need to be close to something we collectively agree is extraordinary. Even if we’re not entirely sure why.
About This Artwork
Estimated price: ~$450 million USD Salvator Mundi (“Savior of the World”) shows Christ holding a crystal orb in one hand and raising the other in blessing. It is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, and fewer than 20 paintings are linked to him. That level of scarcity alone reshapes its value. The story of this painting is as important as the image itself. It was long believed to be lost, then rediscovered in 2005 in a damaged and heavily overpainted state. A careful restoration uncovered details associated with Leonardo’s technique, such as soft transitions known as sfumato and highly controlled anatomy. At the same time, the restoration introduced debate. Some experts believe that parts of the painting may have been completed by Leonardo’s workshop rather than by the master himself. The 2017 Christie’s auction changed everything. The painting was presented not simply as an Old Master work, but as “the last Leonardo.” It was placed in a contemporary art sale, which brought in a different type of buyer. Competition between collectors and broader geopolitical interest pushed the price to 450 million dollars. The crystal orb adds another layer of interpretation. It does not distort light in a realistic way. Some see this as a deliberate artistic decision to preserve the clarity of Christ’s hand. Others interpret it as evidence that the painting may not be entirely by Leonardo. The value of Salvator Mundi comes from a combination of rarity, attribution uncertainty, restoration history, and the narrative built around it. It sits at the intersection of art, belief, and global status.
